CARBONDALE, Kan. -- Four law enforcement officers were shot Saturday morning while responding to a residence in a rural area south of Topeka, Kansas. The shooting was around 10:30 a.m. Three Osage County sheriff's deputies and one Kansas Highway Patrol trooper were shot, Kansas Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Melissa Underwood said. Their conditions are "still very fluid," Underwood said. A male suspect died from gunshot wounds, leaders from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and state Highway Patrol said. One other male was injured and taken to a hospital and is in stable condition, officials said.
Two Los Angeles Police Department officers were transported to the hospital Saturday afternoon in Van Nuys, city police and fire officials said. Few details about what happened are available other than it occurred in a McDonald's parking lot on the 7000 block of Van Nuys Boulevard at 4:12 p.m., according to a police spokesperson. Los Angeles Fire Department ambulances were called to the scene to transport officers to the hospital, a fire spokesperson said.
The investigator who examined Kernodle's body found several defensive knife wounds on her hands in a blood-covered room on the first floor. "It was obvious an intense struggle had occurred," the investigator wrote in one of the newly released reports.
