Eight children have been killed in a shooting spree in the southern US state of Louisiana, in what police said appears to have been an incident of domestic violence.

"This is a very large scene that's involving hundreds of possible witnesses," a sheriff's spokesperson told reporters in a televised briefing.

A shooting occurred in downtown Haverhill at around 11:30 a.m., damaging property but causing no injuries. Haverhill police discovered numerous shell casings at the scene.

"We are currently gathering details on this incident," said school police spokesman Jorge Herrera. "We can confirm the shooting occurred off campus adjacent to Sepulveda Middle School."

Officers from the 28th Precinct, responding to a 911 call about the incident, found the man lying on the ground, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the left leg.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, just before 7 p.m. on Saturday April 11, an emergency call was received reporting a man had been attacked in a Kroger store parking lot.

Officers from the 24th Precinct and the NYPD's Public Service Area 6 rushed to the scene after receiving a 911 call about a man shot at the location.

Sheriff Boudreaux confirmed that the detective was shot while serving an eviction notice, and the suspect is believed to be armed with a high-powered rifle.
