A shooting involving a contracted security officer at U.S. Coast Guard housing in Novato prompted a shelter-in-place order there Thanksgiving night that has since been lifted, Coast Guard officials said Friday. Novato police initially issued an alert shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday about an altercation between US Coast Guard Security and an unknown suspect that led to residents sheltering in place in the Bolling, Marin Valley and Coast Guard housing areas of southern Novato.

Officials identified the suspect as Rahmanullah Lakanwa, who arrived in September 2021 from Afghanistan under the Biden-era Operation Allies Welcome program and was granted asylum earlier this year.
The incident began with a report of a shooting at 4:47 pm Saturday on the 300 block of Cloverdale Heights Way. Officers with Cloverdale Police arrived at the scene along with Sonoma County Sheriff's deputies, and they found a victim there suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A shooting has reportedly caused officials to close a segment of the 5 Freeway in Burbank Saturday night. Burbank police told CBS Los Angeles that authorities closed the freeway after a suspect they tried to apprehend shot a police dog around 8 p.m. The K-9's condition was unknown late Saturday night but KTLA-5 reported that the dog survived and was being treated.
A 22-year-old woman was killed in a shooting in Northridge overnight, police said. The Los Angeles Police Department received a call at around 1:40 a.m. Saturday to Bryant Street and Tampa Avenue near the Northridge Fashion Center. Two men had approached a parked car and shot multiple rounds at the three people who were sitting inside, said LAPD Det. Meghan Aguilar. Aguilar said she did not have information available on whether the two others in the car were injured.
A 41-year-old man is dead and a police officer was injured during a situation this morning in Brownsville. Police responded to Linden Boulevard and Thomas S Boyland Street for a shots-fired incident. Police sources say a 41-year-old man fatally shot himself. Two police officers were at the scene - one of which was shot in the face. Police say that officer is in stable condition.
An NYPD officer was shot at and injured in Brooklyn on Monday when an alleged murder suspect with a shotgun returned to the scene and opened fire, according to two law enforcement sources familiar with the situation. The officer sustained an injury in the fray in Brownsville, but the sources said the nature of that injury wasn't immediately clear. Mayor Eric Adams described one officer as being "shot."
CARBONDALE, Kan. -- Four law enforcement officers were shot Saturday morning while responding to a residence in a rural area south of Topeka, Kansas. The shooting was around 10:30 a.m. Three Osage County sheriff's deputies and one Kansas Highway Patrol trooper were shot, Kansas Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Melissa Underwood said. Their conditions are "still very fluid," Underwood said. A male suspect died from gunshot wounds, leaders from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and state Highway Patrol said. One other male was injured and taken to a hospital and is in stable condition, officials said.
ANTIOCH, Calif. (KGO) -- Antioch police say a 17-year-old was arrested after allegedly shooting a 9-year-old boy Sunday afternoon. It happened around 4:30 p.m. on Sunset Drive. Police say when they arrived, they found the little boy had been struck by gunfire. The boy is expected to be okay. Police say they later identified the suspect as a 17-year-old, who was taken into custody a short time later. Police are now investigating the motive.
