Kirk, 31, a podcast-radio commentator and an influential ally of Donald Trump, is credited with helping build the Republican president's base among younger voters. He was gunned down on Wednesday in what Utah Governor Spencer Cox called a "political assassination". The killing, captured in graphic detail in video clips that rapidly spread around the internet, occurred during a midday event attended by 3,000 people at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, about 40 miles (65 km) south of Salt Lake City.
Four people were killed in a shooting incident in the outskirts of Jerusalem, Israel's ambulance service said, while the police said the perpetrators had been killed. It was not immediately clear who carried out the shooting or what was the motive. Israeli police described the shooters as "terrorists" without saying how many had been involved in the incident. The 15-year-old shooter of Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe, who was attacked in June and died in August, has been sentenced to seven years in juvenile detention. The right-wing politician was shot in the head during a campaign event in Bogota by the teenager, who must remain in a specialised care centre for seven years, deprived of liberty, prosecutors said in a statement on Wednesday.
Originally charged with murder, Sean Karp, 20, instead accepted convictions on charges of voluntary manslaughter and assault with a firearm, court records show. In exchange, he was sentenced to 30 years on Aug. 12, and sent to North Kern State Prison six days later. The sentence resulted from a plea agreement between Karp and Contra Costa prosecutors. Karp was 18 at the time of the shooting.
Kemp must begin home monitoring within two weeks, The Seattle Times reported. He must also serve one year of state Department of Corrections supervision and complete 240 hours of community service. Prosecutors had recommended the six-time NBA All-Star be sentenced to nine months in jail, a year of supervision and pay restitution. Judge Michael Schwartz of Pierce County Superior Court found the circumstances surrounding the crime warranted a lesser sentence, allowing Kemp to avoid incarceration.
