Just after 8 a.m., Bay Area residents received a MyShake alert warning of magnitude 5.9 quake hitting east of Carson City, Nevada, close to the Lake Tahoe region. The quake also appeared on the USGS map of latest earthquakes. But within minutes, the report of the quake disappeared from the USGS page.
The Lake Tahoe ski season is just about to kick off thanks to a parade of storms that have dumped several feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada. At 6:56 p.m., Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm over Emerald Bay, or near South Lake Tahoe, moving east at 20 mph, the NWS Reno NV said.
No roadside parking is permitted in the Emerald Bay area of the Tahoe loop highway from July 15 to Oct. 15, affecting a 5-mile stretch between D.L. Bliss State Park and Cascade Lake.
