"multiple rounds of heavy snow for the Sierras,"
"The high pressure that's been overhead finally has gotten pushed out. There's just this big trough that's set up up there, and we get all these little short waves, kind of spinning around it, and that's what we're going to be seeing here."
"I'd say get all your traveling done and all your plans wrapped up by Sunday. Once that storm has moved in, then it's going to be very difficult to travel, especially over Sierra passes like Donner."
After an extremely dry January, back-to-back storms will bring multiple rounds of heavy snow to the Sierra Nevada beginning Sunday evening. High pressure over the region has been pushed out, allowing a large trough and rotating short waves to produce repeated snowfall through Friday. Forecasts show up to 70 inches along western slopes, 40–50 inches near the Sierra crest around 8,000 feet, and 30–40 inches at lake level. Reno has an estimated 30% chance of an inch at about 4,500 feet. Major traffic impacts to mountain roads are expected starting Monday; complete travel by Sunday.
