After 5 feet of Christmas snow, Tahoe ski season is officially here
"The heavy Christmas snowstorm that dropped up to 5 feet of snow in 72 hours, and led to gridlock on Interstate 80 last week, has turned to crisp snow and sunshine, as resorts opened up their lifts to eager skiers and snowboarders. To the north of the Lake, Palisades Tahoe is reporting 26 lifts running on Monday morning, including Summit and Granite Chief at the 9,000-foot peak looking over Olympic Valley."
"After shuttering over a bitter public access fight last year, Homewood, on Lake Tahoe's West Shore, is back in business this year. "This season marks a very important turning point in Homewood's history," the resort said in a statement posted on its site. "We're reopening, we're committed to staying public." The resort has even launched a new beer, the Home Again Hazy IPA, to celebrate the reopening."
A heavy Christmas snowstorm piled up to 5 feet of snow in 72 hours and caused gridlock on Interstate 80 before clearing to crisp snow and sunshine. Resorts around Lake Tahoe opened lifts and trails, with Palisades Tahoe reporting 26 lifts and Northstar opening nearly half of its more than 100 trails. Sugar Bowl sold out day passes by 9 a.m., and Diamond Peak operated shuttle parking with long lift-pass lines. Heavenly and Kirkwood opened to the south. Homewood reopened after a public access dispute and introduced a celebratory beer. Rain is likely around the lake on New Year’s Day.
