"A Lake Tahoe landmark celebrated for how it encourages people to stop and lean over its railing to admire the water below reopened Tuesday after a full replacement that lasted several months. Fanny Bridge, a historic crossing over the Truckee River, is open again to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in Tahoe City. Part of Highway 89 at the southwestern edge of town, Fanny Bridge spans over Lake Tahoe's only outlet via West Lake Boulevard."
"The bridge earned its nickname for how people's bottoms, or "fannies," often stick out as they peer over the railing to look at the water. Over the years, Fanny Bridge became an icon, but after nearly a century of use, local agencies determined it was time to replace the bridge since it no longer met updated structural and safety standards."
Fanny Bridge in Tahoe City reopened after a multi-month full replacement to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge spans Highway 89 at Lake Tahoe's only outlet on West Lake Boulevard and was originally built in 1928–1929. The nickname derives from people leaning over the railing with their "fannies" visible. Local agencies replaced the nearly century-old structure because it no longer met updated structural and safety standards. Crews began work last summer and mostly removed the old bridge by September. The $10.7 million project added sidewalks, bike lanes on both sides, and pedestrian crossings; the Federal Highway Administration led the project with Caltrans oversight. Reopening was delayed to restore Truckee River flow, and Placer County plans a block party on May 17.
