The incident took place on the R702 road between Borris and Goresbridge at around 6.20am on Wednesday. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body remains there, gardaí said. No other passengers were travelling in the car, and no other injuries were reported following the incident.
A defence solicitor has described a serious unprovoked assault when his client attacked a man who was standing in his own garden. Edward Madden (41), St Mary's Villas, Donore, Co. Meath, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm and to criminal damage charges. Drogheda Court heard that after punching his victim the defendant fled but returned and put a rock through a window of the house.
Gardaí and emergency services were alerted shortly after 9am after a male in his 30s was found unresponsive at a residential property in Castlebar. He was pronounced deceased at the scene a short time later.
"Gardaí were alerted to a suspicious package at a premises in West Clare earlier this evening, Wednesday, January 21, 2026," a garda spokesperson told the Irish Independent. "A cordon was put in place around the area and the services of the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team requested. "The package was subsequently deemed safe, and the cordon has been lifted. "Investigations are ongoing."

"Honestly, lads, breaking into small family businesses? Absolutely pathetic," they said. "Luckily, nobody was hurt and we have the area well covered with CCTV. "There's a lot of footage so far, and I think a lot more will come forward," they added.
