In his biography, "Who Says Elephants Can't Dance?" Gerstner recounted his middle-class upbringing and time at Dartmouth University and Harvard Business School. At 23, he went to work for management consultancy McKinsey and within nine years became a senior partner before taking a senior role at American Express. During his 11 years at American Express, Gerstner had his first encounter with IBM when one of the divisions he oversaw adopted computers from Amdahl in addition to its Big Blue mainframes.
On the "Decoder" podcast, he estimated that building and outfitting a one-gigawatt AI data center costs $80 billion, with industry plans for 100 gigawatts potentially requiring $8 trillion in capital expenditure. That would demand $800 billion in profits just to cover interest. He pegged the likelihood of achieving artificial general intelligence with current technology at "between zero and one percent."
SAN JOSE Two tech companies, IBM and Infineon, have disclosed new rounds of employment cutbacks that will erase the jobs of more than 100 tech workers in the Bay Area. The staffing reductions extend what has turned out to be a difficult two weeks for Bay Area tech workers, who are collectively facing the loss of several hundred jobs in the region as a result of recent layoff disclosures by their employers.
International Business Machines Corp. ( NYSE: IBM) announced terrible quarterly results. Revenue rose only 9% to $16.3 billion. Earnings did rise to $1.87 from ($0.36), but it took a charge in the year-ago quarter that affected earnings. A better way to look at the numbers is operating (non-GAAP) pretax income from continuing operations, which was $3.0 billion, up from $2.5 billion in the same period of last year.
Tech behemoth IBM is teaming up with AI research lab Anthropic to bring AI into its software. Armonk, New York-based IBM announced it will be adding Anthropic's Claude large language model family into some of its software products on Tuesday. The first product to tap Claude will be IBM's integrated development environment, which is already available to a select group of customers.

I was born with neurofibromatosis, a condition that causes tumors to grow on nerves.As a preteen, I was introduced by a school nurse to an organization called the Little Baby Face Foundation that helped treat the tumors. I knew then I wasn't going to let my condition affect my career path.
