IBM's CEO admits Gen Z's hiring nightmare is real-but after promising to hire more grads, he's laying off thousands of workers | Fortune
""People are talking about either layoffs or freezing hiring, but I actually want to say that we are the opposite," Krishna told last week. "I expect we are probably going to hire more people out of college over the next 12 months than we have in the past few years, so you're going to see that.""
""IBM's workforce strategy is driven by having the right people with the right skills to do the work our clients need," the spokesperson added. "We routinely review our workforce through this lens and at times rebalance accordingly.""
"An IBM spokesperson told Fortune that the latest round of layoffs would impact a "low single-digit percentage" of the company's global workforce. And, when combined with new hiring, it would leave the company's U.S. headcount roughly flat."
Layoffs are spreading across major employers as companies restructure around AI and automation, prompting large job cuts at firms from Amazon to Target and now IBM. IBM plans to cut thousands of workers by year-end while shifting focus to high-growth software and AI areas. The CEO said the company expects to increase hiring of recent college graduates despite acknowledging that automation will cause some reductions and describing the net mix as positive. A spokesperson said cuts would affect a "low single-digit percentage" of the global workforce and combined with new hiring would leave U.S. headcount roughly flat.
