San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties are the focus of a tornado warning issued at 3:56 p.m. on Monday by the National Weather Service. The warning is in effect until 4:15 p.m. At 3:56 p.m., a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located 10 miles west of Boulder Creek, or 17 miles northwest of Santa Cruz, moving north at 35 mph, the NWS San Francisco CA said. Expect damage to mobile homes, roofs, and vehicles.
Jasmine De La Cruz, a trainee at the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, requested the board to cover her lost wages, benefits and damaged reputation, but supervisors denied her request on Tuesday. De La Cruz's attorney, Ryan Kraft from the Venardi Aurada firm, submitted the claim on Oct 29, alleging that she was discriminated against for not accommodating her disability.
All 20 cities in San Mateo County have joined the county in suing the state, accusing officials of withholding more than $38 million in promised funding and demanding the money be restored. The lawsuit, originally filed in August in San Francisco, focuses on a state funding system that county officials say shortchanges only three counties: San Mateo, Alpine and Mono.
Binder is following through on a promise he made before being appointed, that he would bring back former Undersheriff Chris Hsiung, who resigned in June 2024 while he was fired sheriff Christina Corpus' undersheriff. After quitting as Corpus' undersheriff, Hsiung co-founded a nonprofit called The Curve, which promotes changing police culture. He is taking a leave of absence to serve as Binder's undersheriff.

The inmate, identified as 31-year-old Markeisha Monique Renee Blount, suffered a medical emergency around 6 a.m. on Sept. 29 at the Maple Street Correctional Facility, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said in a news release Tuesday.
