Head of Corpus' youth program resigns with a scathing letter
Briefly

Maggie Cornejo resigned as executive director of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Activities League, citing that the organization had been crippled by politics and fear. The resignation occurred Aug. 19 on the second day of a hearing to determine whether Sheriff Christina Corpus will remain in office; Corpus faces accusations of nepotism, intimidation, retaliation and other forms of corruption. Cornejo described a recent SAL board meeting as epitomizing a culture of divisiveness and political paranoia and said several board members later acknowledged inappropriate behavior by others. Cornejo recommended suspending fundraising until SAL can demonstrate accountability and deliver tangible value aligned with donor expectations. SAL was founded in 1997 to prevent juvenile delinquency, serves about 3,500 youth annually in North Fair Oaks, and reported $950,000 in revenue for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024.

She said things got so bad that several board members reached out to her afterward to acknowledge the inappropriate behavior of other board members. "In my professional opinion, the organization should suspend fundraising efforts until it can demonstrate accountability and deliver meaningful and tangible value aligned with donors' expectations," Cornejo said in her letter.
