LAFAYETTE The campus at Las Trampas bustled as it usually does on the typical weekday, with dozens of intellectually and developmentally disabled individuals engaging with programs designed to stimulate and assist their independent living. This day, though, was busier than most. State Sen. Tim Grayson (D-CA9) would be visiting them, touring the grounds and meeting with some of the members, who Las Trampas empowers to advocate for themselves.

MARTINEZ - A 40-year-old Union City woman who allegedly fired a handgun at a boy last month in San Ramon is facing a charge of attempted murder, prosecutors said. The incident happened Nov. 23, according to the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office. The boy was wounded in the shooting, but the injury was not life-threatening.

Nurses rallied at county hospitals Tuesday to protest furloughs and dangerous staffing shortages stemming from President Donald Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill," which slashed funding for vital services including Medi-Cal and food stamps. Dozens of local nurses have been furloughed across Regional Medical Center, Valley Medical Center, O'Connor Hospital and St. Louise Regional Hospital over the past few months.

Southern California Edison did not spend hundreds of millions of dollars on maintenance of its aging transmission lines that it told regulators was necessary and began billing to customers in the four years before the Jan. 7 wildfires, according to a Times review of regulatory filings. Edison told state regulators in its 2023 wildfire prevention plan that it believed its giant, high-voltage transmission lines, which carry bulk power across its territory, "generally have a lower risk of ignition" than its smaller distribution wires, which deliver power to neighborhoods.

Owners of stolen Kia and Hyundai vehicles may be entitled to money after the vehicle manufacturers failed to install common anti-theft technology, according to California Attorney General Rob Bonta. As part of a settlement with multiple state attorneys general, including Bonta, the makers of Kia and Hyundai vehicles will pay a settlement of about $9 million. In 2022 and 2023, a dramatic rise in stolen Hyundai and Kia vehicles were reported in the U.S., thanks in part to viral TikTok trends and easily bypassed security.

Starting this week, people can now join their loved ones past the security checkpoint at Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport. The new OAK Guest Pass program began on Monday, December 15. 'Non-passengers' can now apply online for security clearance up to seven days in advance of the day they want to visit the airport. "We're very excited to be one of the first in the country to have the guest pass," said Kristi McKenney, Executive Director of the Port of Oakland.

SAN JOSE - A woman was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run after a man jumped out of her moving car and was killed over the weekend in San Jose, police said. The incident happened just before 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the 4900 block of McCoy Avenue, near Grandby Drive, San Jose police Officer Tanya Hernandez said in a news release. Officers arrived to find the man in the eastbound lane of McCoy Avenue suffering from major injuries, Hernandez said.

The leaders of a mysterious "cult-like" California religious group allegedly tied to the death of a 4-year-old boy and a man who disappeared from a coffee shop have been charged with murder. The arrests of leading members of what authorities are calling a "religious high-control group" named His Way Spirit Led Assemblies are connected to the alleged murder of Emilio Ghanem, 40, who went missing in 2023, and the alleged murder of 4-year-old Timothy "Timo" Thomas.

The cafe side of the shop was smashed by a speeding car on Thanksgiving night. The driver was identified as Karl Horst Klemmer, a 90-year-old resident of Los Gatos. The collision ended in a misdemeanor arrest. Klemmer was transported to the hospital in serious condition before dying on Dec. 7 from complications of multiple injuries to include pelvic fracture, according to the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office.

SFFD says 14 people were taken to a local hospital. Two people had minor trauma and 12 people reported aches and pains. This happened California Street Line between Leavenworth & Hyde. SKY7 video shows heavy fire and police department officials in the area as they investigate.

Dec. 12 PETTY THEFT: 8:53 p.m. at Safeway on North Santa Cruz Avenue. A juvenile boy walked out with a 30-pack of Coors Light. Dec. 13 PETTY THEFT: 9:13 p.m. on Dardanelli Lane. On Tuesday, a UPS package was stolen from the porch for an approximate loss of $100. On Thursday, an Amazon package was stolen from the porch for a loss of around $55.

Rain was expected to return to the Bay Area overnight Monday and could stick around through next week, potentially complicating holiday travel, according to the National Weather Service forecast office in Monterey. The North Bay will welcome the first salvo of showers, the agency said in an area forecast discussion. The wet weather will then spread south to the Peninsula by Tuesday afternoon. Showers are expected to continue into Wednesday.

Investigators found one person dead and three others injured Monday at a property in the unincorporated part of the city, authorities said. The discovery happened about 8:05 a.m. after deputies from the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office responded to a welfare check in the 5100 block of Laurel Drive, the sheriff's office said in a statement. Once there, they found a resident dead, and three other injured people who were rushed via ambulance to a hospital.

Update 3:35 p.m. - Menlo Park Police issued an update to the incident saying that the man who died was a missing and suicidal person from outside of the county that authorities were looking for because he was armed with a gun. After getting calls about the armed man, police surrounded the man's car and tried to talk to talk to him, but he did not respond, and police saw a handgun on the man's chest, according to spokeswoman Nicole Acker.

Christopher Joel Fitzgerald was driving through the Willow Road and University Avenue intersection on Oct. 1 at 2:20 a.m. when all four of the tires of his 2019 Ram truck were punctured by a spike strip, according to the claim he submitted to the city. Fitzgerald said the spike strip was left unattended when he drove through it and is now asking for $1,519, according to his claim.

Oakland will join several other Northern California cities that have begun enforcing street parking fees on Sundays, an effort to boost public revenues and commercial activity in the cash-strapped city. Starting Jan. 4, Oakland residents who fail to feed the city-run street meters and parking kiosks between noon and 6 p.m. Sunday will receive a warning, officials said. After 30 days, the city will begin issuing tickets.

Cellphones across the Bay Area rang out with another earthquake alarm Sunday afternoon, but this time it was not a false alarm. An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 shook under Sonoma County at 3:30 pm Sunday, with an epicenter about 3 miles west of Glen Ellen. That was followed by a 3.1M aftershock at 3:38 pm. The Shake Alert message that came through cellphones in San Francisco said that the initial earthquake was a 4.9M, and said to take cover and expect shaking,

Two people were found dead Sunday inside the Brentwood, California, home owned by Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer According to NBC 4 Los Angeles, LA Fire Department Paramedics were called to the home around 3:30 p.m. local time, where they discovered a deceased man and woman, approximately 78 and 68 years old. The identifies of the victims have not been revealed, but they match the ages of Reiner and Singer.
