"When a company's fire destroys or contaminates homes, that company has a responsibility to keep families housed until they can get back home,"
"If families are pushed to give up what they are owed just to survive, the recovery will never have the funds required to rebuild homes, restore livelihoods or stabilize the community,"
A coalition of Eaton fire survivors and community groups demanded that Southern California Edison provide immediate housing assistance to thousands displaced by the Jan. 7 wildfire. Many Altadena residents are running out of insurance coverage that had been paying for housing, and thousands had no insurance at all. The coalition requested emergency aid of up to $200,000 per family and argued the utility must keep families housed until they can return. Survivors described losing homes, businesses, and possessions. Edison is offering direct payments that require victims to waive their right to sue, raising concerns about undercutting full recovery.
