Staffing RequirementsCovered retailers must ensure the self-service checkout stations are staffed by: Assigning at least one employee to supervise the self-service checkout operation at all times the self-service checkout is operating. Ensuring that the assigned employee has no other work responsibilities that would interfere with their oversight of the self-service checkout operations. Maintaining a staffing ratio of one employee for every three self-service checkout stations, if the retailer operates multiple stations.
Self-checkout kiosks are among the most controversial advents in the grocery industry, popular for their convenience yet criticized for being difficult to use and enabling theft. These potential downsides may be why Aldi is getting rid of many self-checkout lanes, joining the growing list of grocery chains that have done the same. The new anti-theft program is funded by a $100,000 grant provided by the District Attorney's Office and will allow about 200 businesses to be equipped with the new technology, Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen announced. The video then shows a group of people dressed in dark clothing rush into the store and then run out with stolen items. The people are then seen getting into other vehicles that were either parked nearby or that pulled up.
In the years immediately following the pandemic, retail theft became a business-busting, job-killing plague in New York. Professional shoplifters used the five-finger discount more effectively than they had in years, grabbing whatever they could get their hands on and selling the hot commodities online for profit. The city and state fought back not by sending in armed troops, but with common-sense solutions.
Several law enforcement agencies worked together to take down the theft crew through "Operation Kill Switch," which arrested 14 people on Aug. 14, nine of whom have since been charged. The criminal enterprise was allegedly led by David Ahl of Woodland Hills, who now faces 45 felony counts, including conspiracy, organized retail theft, grand theft, receiving stolen property and money laundering, prosecutors said. If convicted as charged, he faces up to 32 years in prison.
Investigators observed repeated hand-to-hand transactions involving a heavy garbage bag outside an Oakland liquor store, leading to charges of receiving stolen property against two suspects.
