""Small businesses are the (back) bone of the economy in California. I'm asking the government what can you do? I'm asking Mr. Gavin Newsom, what do you do?""
""He will never come back to the store again because of the horror that's still in his head. He cannot,""
""That might be accountability for drug treatment. That might mean sending someone who needs it to a mental health facility for a period of time. It may mean some jail time,""
Mayors, community leaders and business representatives gathered outside Valley Fair mall in San Jose after a weekend smash-and-grab at Macy's, one of several recent high-profile retail crimes in the South Bay. An 88-year-old jewelry store owner was assaulted during a robbery in the fall and refuses to return because of lasting mental trauma. Speakers called for stronger accountability measures for offenders, including drug treatment, mandated mental health care and jail time. Officials urged full implementation and proper funding of Proposition 36, passed in November 2024, and pressed Sacramento to address funding shortfalls quickly to protect small businesses.
