If you were to consider baked potatoes' finest qualities, luxury would not usually be one of them. This dish has always been pure comfort, encapsulated in steaming smoke and golden starch. It asks for nothing much, only butter, chives, and maybe sour cream. It's not too often that you'd find gourmet things like crème fraîche and caviar piled atop. And yet, these ingredients still fit right into the humble baked potatoes, even going so far as elevating them to restaurant-worthy status.

Guests enter the restaurant through the main doors of the Westin and land in the Bourbon Loungeformerly Clock Bara cinematic expanse of marble and brass, with coffered ceilings lit by sparkling spherical chandeliers and warm globe lamps that illuminate soft leather stools. A party of Gatsby impersonators would blend right in. You could linger here all night sipping craft cocktails that nod to Mina's legacy of restaurants.

Every Sunday at Be.Steak.A, located in the Pruneyard shopping center, a $135-per-person buffet featuring about 130 different items takes over part of the dining room, the bar and even the kitchen. There are omelet, Belgian waffle and carving stations, a self-serve caviar bar and an over-the-top dessert selection. "We're doing something that nobody else is doing in the Bay Area at this point," said chef and owner Jeffrey Stout.

Stepping into Caviar House in Piccadilly feels like entering a world where luxury and comfort meet effortlessly. Known for its caviar heritage, the restaurant does not disappoint when it comes to other delicacies either, especially its sushi and sake. The sushi is impeccably fresh and beautifully presented, each piece clearly crafted with care. Pairing it with sake elevates the experience even further, balancing the delicate flavours perfectly.

That preservative is borax (also known as E285, sodium tetraborate) - yes, the same compound that can clean your sink or boost laundry detergent. A close cousin, boric acid (E286), sometimes substitutes for it. Caviar makers prize both because they're remarkably effective: they fight bacteria, firm up the delicate roe, and even mellow out that sharp "fishy" taste.

Chef Shaun Heggart has been serving caviar at his Michelin-starred restaurants for several decades, making it accessible for all to enjoy.

Caviar, especially the highly sought-after Strottarga Bianco Caviar, ranges in price from $50 to over $100,000 and has distinct flavors depending on the sturgeon species.
