UC Berkeley professor and architect William C. Hays had a vision for this oceanfront land, building the large, Spanish-style Casa Del Rey apartment complex and hotel in 1926. In 1964, it was renamed La Bahia Apartments, the ornate bell tower, Juliet balconies, and interior courtyards remaining notable elements even after it was abandoned and left to deteriorate. It's a sunny Tuesday afternoon in May, and it could not be nicer in Santa Cruz: 73 degrees without a cloud in the sky. A gentle breeze rustles the city's palm trees. Teenagers yelp as they chug along the pavement on trick bikes, and parents lazily wander back from the beach, their sunburnt toddlers already sound asleep in their strollers. There's nothing I'd love more than to read my book by the ocean, but my growling stomach leads me through the robin's-egg blue doors of a building in the shadow of the boardwalk.

A small plane made an emergency landing in a field near Coast Road on Saturday just north of the Santa Cruz city limits. According to Cecile Juliette, a public information officer with the Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit, the plane consisted of a pilot and a student and lost power over Scotts Valley, prompting an emergency landing.
