A pedestrian was struck by a car on Mission Street (Highway 1) near Bay Street in Santa Cruz around 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9. The 30-year-old man was crossing outside a marked crosswalk when a northbound vehicle hit him and the driver initially left the scene. The man was taken to a hospital and died on Jan. 11. A 39-year-old suspected driver returned to the crash site shortly after the collision and was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and possession of a controlled substance. The pedestrian's identity will be withheld until next of kin are notified.
