"Central Fire District Division Chief Patrick Winters said first responders rushed to the well-known surf spot around 9:03 a.m. after receiving reports of two surfers - both men in their early 20s - in distress as a result of the high tide and relentless swell. Upon arrival, rescue crews discovered that one of the surfers had made it past the line of breaking waves and appeared safe while the other was caught in the tumult."
"He was unconscious and submerged beneath the waves with trauma to his head, according to Winters. The victim was extracted from the water using a rescue watercraft - similar to a Jet Ski - and CPR was initiated and continued as he was moved to the Santa Cruz Harbor with assistance from American Medical Response and Santa Cruz Harbor Patrol."
First responders rushed to The Hook around 9:03 a.m. after reports of two male surfers in their early 20s in distress due to high tide and relentless swell. One surfer made it past the line of breaking waves and appeared safe while the other was pulled down the coast toward Privates and Capitola. Rescue personnel located the surfer's broken board near rocks, found the victim unconscious and submerged with head trauma, and extracted him using a rescue watercraft. CPR was performed during transport to Santa Cruz Harbor and the victim was taken to Dignity Health Dominican Hospital. The other surfer returned safely to shore using the staircase at The Hook. Entry into the water is not advised in unfavorable conditions.
