The driver of the car, a 29-year-old woman, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder, GBH, dangerous driving and drink driving.

A grey Toyota mounted the kerb on Langs Road and struck two pedestrians just before 5pm, police said in a statement.

The gentleman was trying to park in a parking spot and lost control of his vehicle, drove across the street and unfortunately hit two folks on the sidewalk.

"We're looking at quite large new numbers of residents that will be in this part of town. And the decision was made that we need to connect those parts of town across the water to downtown, but that we need to do it in a way that won't increase congestion."

A man had been hit and was pronounced dead at the scene, they said. Police said on social media that the driver and vehicle stayed behind at the scene.
