Despite a contract that ran through the 2030 season, and with a $9 million payday in 2024, the university made the decision to move on from a coach who authored an impressive era in Lexington. Stoops would be owed 75% of his remaining salary, which equates to approximately $37.7 million. After a season that ended Saturday with a 41-0 loss to in-state rival Louisville, Stoops said he wasn't going anywhere.
The Bears take the field without nine-year coach Justin Wilcox, who was fired last Sunday following the Bears' 31-10 collapse in the Big Game at Stanford. Interim head coach Nick Rolovich, who is among at least 14 names on general manager Ron Rivera's list of potential replacements, indicated Tuesday he likely would be open to remaining on the staff even if someone else is chosen as coach. Rolovich served most of this season as senior offensive analyst . . .
Entering Saturday's 31-10 loss at Stanford, Wilcox had won four consecutive Big Games and led the team to a third consecutive bowl-eligible season, but the meltdown proved too much to keep his job. After careful consideration, we believe the time has come for new leadership, Bears football general manager Ron Rivera said in a statement. We wish Justin the best of luck in his future endeavors.
SJSU fired defensive coordinator Derrick Odum following a 55-10 loss against Nevada. Inside linebackers coach Bojay Filimoeatu will serve as the interim defensive coordinator for the final two games. During SJSU's loss to Nevada, the Spartans only had 270 total yards of offense, one yard more than their season low against Texas. Quarterback Walker Eget is coming off his worst game as an SJSU starter, only throwing for 74 yards and three interceptions.
A year before Virginia Tech came as close as it ever has to winning a national championship, it installed an empty trophy case in its football facility. The idea, the program's leadership believed, was that the case would eventually be filled. Frank Beamer had built the Hokies into a power, Michael Vick turned the program into a national brand, and championships were sure to follow.
The stands inside Boone Pickens Stadium are brimming with the usual unusual characters. Naturally, the fans in Section 2 NO-SHIRTY 1 are already shirtless. The most popular bananas on campus are here, too. The Kool-Aid Man, of course, is sitting just a few rows over. This is the scene 40 minutes before Oklahoma State's Week 12 visit from Kansas State. Amid the most forlorn season in the Cowboys' modern football history, the Stillwater faithful is coping as best it can this fall, uncovering new methods to mine slivers of joy out of its football misery.
Vlatko Andonovski has relinquished his head coaching role with the Kansas City Current to shift solely into his role as sporting director, creating a head-coaching vacancy at the NWSL's top overall team for the 2025 regular season. In a wider reorganization, Kansas City has also promoted Ryan Dell to general manager, replacing incumbent GM Caitlin Carducci. Andonovski held the dual role of head coach and sporting director since joining the Current in late 2023
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Although there weren't expectations for rookie Cam Ward to lead the Tennessee Titans to a Super Bowl in his first season, there was a degree of belief that the No. 1 pick would offer a promising look into the future. There have been flashes, such as Ward's first NFL touchdown pass -- when he threw the ball across his body while scrambling to fellow rookie Elic Ayomanor against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 2.
Ivan Juric has been relieved of his duties as Atalanta's head coach after an underwhelming start to the Serie A season. Juric, who replaced Gian Piero Gasperini in June, oversaw just 15 matches in all competitions, winning just four of those games, while drawing a staggering eight times. Indeed, five of those stalemates came in succession in the Italian top-flight, drawing that many games for the first time since 2011 under Stefano Colantuono (also five).
Rival programs have cast their attention to Auburn's incoming class since the program fired coach Hugh Freeze last weekend. Elsewhere, Ohio State, Texas and Texas Tech are among the programs charging for late-cycle flips with key visitors expected on campus in the coming weeks, while the market for premium defensive tackles, led by fall decommits Danny Beale ( Oklahoma State), Dylan Berymon (Texas) and Emanuel Ruffin ( Colorado) is intensifying this month.
The Big Ten title might have gone through the Week 10 meeting between the Penn State Nittany Lions' visit to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Instead, Penn State's season collapsed and it has fired James Franklin and the Lions lost their starting QB, Drew Allar, for the season. The Buckeyes have been unstoppable and largely unchallenged this season. QB Julian Sayin has been remarkably efficient, completing 80% of his passes with a 19-to-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
Genoa, Serie A's bottom side, have sacked Patrick Vieira after a winless start to their campaign, with three draws and six losses. The former France midfielder Vieira took over in November last year when Genoa were 17th and helped the club avoid relegation, finishing 13th in the Italian top flight. However, they made a dismal start to the new season, scoring four goals in nine matches.
Bayern Munich will face off with perennial pain in the butt, Borussia Mönchengladbach, in a game that looks extremely lopsided on the surface. Gladbach is in the midst of a trainwreck of a season where nothing seems to be working and also where the club has already changed coaches. It has been nothing short of a debacle so far --
The Florida Gators are turning to Steve Spurrier to help fix the team's floundering offense. Steve Spurrier Jr., anyway. Interim coach Billy Gonzales said Wednesday the younger Spurrier, who was hired as an offensive analyst earlier this year, will be more involved with quarterback DJ Lagway when the Gators (3-4, 2-2 SEC) play No. 5 Georgia (6-1, 4-1) in Jacksonville on Nov. 1.
"We agree that -- unfortunately -- our on-field performance has not lived up to the standard of winning we have for the program," athletic director Mark Ingram said in a statement announcing the decision. "I wish Coach Dilfer the best and thank him for his class, tireless work and commitment during his tenure at UAB. "While his efforts did not translate into a winning record, each young man who played for him will be a better person as a result."
