Chargers OC Josh McDaniel 'geeked' to work with Justin Herbert
""The opportunity to work with Coach Harbaugh," said McDaniel, "that was too good to pass up.""
""Not relying too heavily on Justin's ability to do above and beyond, I think, is critical to maximize those types of opportunities," McDaniel said. "That'll be one of the first things that we'll try to do, is take a little off his plate so that he is free to do that when his greatness is required.""
""That's what I knew," McDaniel joked."
Coach Jim Harbaugh fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman two days after the Chargers' wild-card loss to the Patriots. Roman had been Harbaugh's only NFL offensive coordinator but the Chargers' offense was inconsistent and lacked creativity, producing one touchdown across two playoff appearances. Harbaugh hired Mike McDaniel, who said the opportunity to work with Harbaugh was too good to pass up. McDaniel aims to build an offense emphasizing efficiency and structure to reduce reliance on Justin Herbert's improvisation. Injuries to Pro Bowl tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Salter in 2025 forced Herbert into frequent heroics, including a Week 6 escape and 42-yard completion to Ladd McConkey. McDaniel's Miami units led the league in total offense in 2023.
