Pete DeBoer was named the new head coach of the New York Islanders after being let go by the Dallas Stars. He received a call from Islanders GM Mathieu Darche following a disappointing loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. DeBoer was initially surprised by the timing but was convinced by Darche's vision for the organization. The Islanders had recently parted ways with Patrick Roy after three seasons. DeBoer’s previous connections within the organization also played a role in his decision to accept the position.
