Providence ousted from Big East Tournament, expected to fire coach Kim English
"I'm not a very emotional person. I don't want anyone's sympathy. Like, I don't like anyone's pity. I never have been more proud standing in the locker room than I was after this season."
"I think he handled it great. He had great character about the situation. He talked to us about it. His biggest thing was, don't worry about him. Don't worry about the media. He's the best coach I ever had."
"As a young coach figuring it out in a league with whales, giants, college basketball royalty, you know, I'm figuring it out. I didn't get to figure it out in the Northeast Conference."
Kim English's time as Providence basketball coach concludes after the Friars lost 85-72 to St. John's in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals. Multiple reports indicated the school informed English of his dismissal before the season ended. English replaced Ed Cooley, who led Providence to seven NCAA Tournaments in 12 years before departing for Georgetown in 2023. Under English's three-year tenure, Providence compiled a 48-52 record, never reached the NCAA Tournament, and failed to achieve a winning record in Big East play. The team went 0-10 against ranked opponents since English's first season. Despite the disappointing results, players praised English's character and leadership throughout the difficult season.
