According to Oakland transportation department staff who spoke at a recent infrastructure committee meeting of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission, the city is expected to remove driving lanes in what's called a "road diet," and add crosswalks, buffered bikeways, and pedestrian islands. These changes are part of the 18th Street Complete Streets Paving Project, which has been in the planning stages for years - and has long been on the wish list of area residents.
OAKLAND - A 42-year-old woman was shot Sunday night while she was sitting in her parked car in West Oakland, authorities said. The woman was in stable condition Monday at a hospital where she was being treated for a wound to her lower leg, authorities said. The shooting happened about 8:39 p.m. Sunday in the 1700 block of Goss Street. The woman, who lives nearby, told police she was sitting in her car when she heard gunfire and realized she had been wounded.

OAKLAND Three San Francisco boys, ages 15 and 16, were arrested in the Tuesday morning carjacking of a woman and an attempted carjacking where the car owner was knocked to the ground and punched and kicked, authorities said. Additional suspects were being sought in the West Oakland incidents. About 4:31 a.m. Tuesday a 31-year-old woman had her SUV stolen by several suspects including one who may have had a firearm in the 1100 block of 30th Street, authorities said.
OAKLAND A 67-year-old man fatally shot outside his West Oakland home last week was an innocent victim hit by a stray bullet fired during a gun battle between the occupants of moving vehicles, police said. Tony Jerome Norman was shot about 5 p.m. Aug. 27 after walking home from BART to his residence in the 700 block of 17th Street after completing his shift as a security guard at a San Francisco Kaiser Permanente hospital.
Gunshots were reported around 5 p.m. in the 700 block of 17th Street, according to the Oakland Police Department. Officers arrived to find a person suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Medical personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene. Police did not publicly identify the person.
