Interstate 980 in Oakland, built in the 1960s, displaced around 500 families and destroyed numerous Black-owned businesses. In a recent community engagement, residents are invited to provide feedback on Vision 980, a project by Caltrans aiming to reimagine the highway. Initial studies indicate a desire for enhancements that honor the history and needs of displaced communities while improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists. A public survey and open house will gather further insights into possible transformations like parks or housing developments, focusing on environmental concerns and prioritizing the local community's needs.
The findings from the initial study revealed a strong public sentiment that any changes to the I-980 should prioritize the needs of those displaced decades ago, advocating consensus on improvements that enhance community safety.
The community feedback collected will drive plans, aiming to repurpose I-980 into meaningful spaces like parks or housing, actively involving residents who experienced displacement due to its construction.
