"On Sunday morning, our dear friend and dedicated community leader, Candace, experienced a devastating fire that damaged both her car and home, destroying many of her personal belongings. We are deeply grateful she is safe, but the fire has created unexpected logistical and financial challenges," Calcagni explained in the online fundraiser. "Anyone who knows Candace knows how tirelessly she works to uplift others. She shows up for her community every day, and now it's our turn to show up for her."
A man has been accused of arson and attempted murder after a fire at a block of flats in north London left three children in hospital. The Metropolitan Police said it charged Nathaniel Dwyer-White, 33, in relation to a fire in a residential building in Maybury Close, Enfield, on Monday. He was charged on Wednesday with attempted murder, arson with intent to endanger life, causing actual bodily harm, stalking and sending threatening letters or communication, police said.
The blaze destroyed nearly everything they owned and displaced them from their home with just a few belongings in a matter of several hours, Evans told Hyperallergic in a phone call from a hotel where she is currently living. "There's a lot of things that went wrong," Evans said. "It was not like the movies where it's very clear it's an emergency," she added, recalling how the building's smoke alarms had not even gone off when she and her neighbors cleared their homes.
