Every year, usually in September, Apple announces a new iPhone. This year was no exception. I've been using the new iPhone 17 Pro for the past couple of weeks. So far, I find it to be an excellent phone. I can recommend it for anyone who likes iPhones, although I almost never recommend people upgrade on an annual basis unless you've got deep pockets or a compelling reason to have the latest tech. Because of my work, I fit into that latter category.

Apple has acknowledged that worn MagSafe charging stands in its retail stores are causing marks on the new iPhone 17 Pro models, addressing concerns that emerged within hours of the device's launch. Apple told 9to5Mac that the visible imperfections on demo units are not scratches, but rather "material transfer" from aging display equipment that can be removed with cleaning. (Some users, it's worth noting, say they tried rubbing out the marks on the Apple Store's demo units but "nothing happened," claiming "they're scratches.")
iFixit talked to David Niebuhr, an engineer and professor of mechanical engineering, who has an explanation for why scratches around the iPhone 17 Pro's camera plateau stick out so much with spalling damage that didn't appear in tests of other areas. According to Niebuhr, the problem is the sharp edge of the camera bump where the anodization process isn't as even, as he says, "Apple could have prevented this by making a more gradual curve and avoiding a relatively sharp corner."
YouTuber Zack Nelson from JerryRigEverything, in his durability tests, found that the iPhone 17 Pro series scratches easily, particularly around the sharp edges of the large rear camera module. According to him, the issue lies in the anodized coating, which struggles to adhere to these sharp edges. The problem is especially noticeable on the Blue and Orange variants of the iPhone 17 Pro, where the coating on the edge can chip off with everyday contact from items like keys or coins.
This year, Apple unveiled that they were ditching Titanium for forged Aluminum with the latest Pro series. The reason, because the forged aluminum allowed the phone to integrate a new vapor chamber for overall better heat dissipation. However, that tradeoff might have accidentally revealed why Titanium was always a great idea - strength. As the strongest metal known to humankind, Titanium is a hot favorite in the EDC circles for a reason.
Whereas the iPhone Air is all about showing off its ridiculously thin and light design, the iPhone 17 Pros go in the opposite direction with thicker and heavier designs. Apple is basically saying, F*ck all that skinny noise, let's throw everything but the kitchen sink at them. Even better cameras on the front and back? Check. The longest battery life of any iPhone? Check. The most powerful mobile chip? Check.
Apple has announced the latest iPhone 17 lineup, including the with its A19 Pro processor for improved battery life and performance. And if you're ready to upgrade your smartphone, right now at T-Mobile, you can get an iPhone 17 Pro for free when you have a qualifying trade-in and sign up for or switch to the Experience Beyond mobile plan.
As a current iPhone 14 Pro Max user, I still feel like my three-year-old iPhone gives me everything I need from a smartphone. Sure, it may still have a Lightning Port and no support for Apple Intelligence, but I get around those very minor discomforts by using a MagSafe charger and ChatGPT. Truth be told, the Apple Intelligence features haven't wowed me enough to make me fork over $1,000 on a newer iPhone.
It's a purpose-built hub designed to solve every major problem that has kept the iPhone from being a primary camera on a serious film set. For years, filmmakers have used iPhones for B-roll or in tight spots where a larger camera wouldn't fit, but integrating them into a professional workflow has always been a collection of compromises and clunky workarounds.
With Final Cut Camera 2.0, users on the iPhone 17 Pro series gain support for ProRes RAW and genlock, while the entire iPhone 17 lineup benefits from new manual controls for the front camera. Apple has included open gate recording support in the new update, which lets users record footage using the entire camera sensor at resolutions higher than DCI 4K. This means you can record in horizontal or vertical orientation without having to turn the phone.
Buying the cheapest "Pro" version of Apple's new iPhone lineup just got $100 more expensive. The brand new iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099. That's a $100 increase from the starter iPhone 16 Pro model, which launched at $999 with 128 GB of storage. Unlike its predecessor, though, the entry-level iPhone 17 Pro has 256 GB - more storage than last year's cheapest iPhone 16 Pro.
Apple just announced arguably its boldest Pro iPhone color ever: the new "cosmic orange" for the iPhone 17 Pro. And to my surprise, I think it looks really good. In choosing a bold hue as its hero shade for the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple also seems to have nailed one of the season's hottest colors. Orange showed up a lot on fashion runways earlier this year, and orange-y citrus shades were one of this summer's color trends, according to Vogue.
Apple says the iPhone 17 Pro is the most durable iPhone ever. It features Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, which is said to be 3x scratch-resistant than before. Additionally, there's Ceramic Shield on the back, said to be four times stronger than before. If your current iPhone is prone to scratches and it is bothersome to you, the iPhone 17 Pro would be the perfect new phone.
While the best feature of the iPhone 17 is its screen, the screens are virtually the only thing not to be overhauled for the iPhone 17 Pro, though they do get the more scratch-resistant, anti-reflective Ceramic Shield 2 coating. The new designs have a new aluminum unibody enclosure, with a glass cutout on the back to allow for wireless charging and a huge new camera bump that Apple calls the "camera plateau," stretching all the way across the back.
Apple launched the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max today with a new design and an upgraded camera system. The devices are powered by the new A19 Pro chipset and have a larger battery, Apple said. Plus, it noted that eSIM-only models will have a slightly larger battery as compared to Pro models with physical SIMs. The new Pro phones have an aluminium unibody instead of the titanium used in the previous year's iPhone.
