The MTA took its first plunge into the summer season on Thursday afternoon with the launch of its express Long Island Rail Road Hamptons service ahead of Memorial Day Weekend. MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber and LIRR President Rob Free announced the return of the agency's Cannonball service ahead of the first such train of the season departing New York Penn Station at 4:07 p.m. on May 21. The service resumed just in time for the unofficial start of summer, and days after the MTA and five unions representing about half of the LIRR workforce resolved a three-day strike late Monday night.

Typically I avoid telling people where I'm from. I moved to the Hamptons, in spite of it being the Hamptons, and later to the Cotswolds, in spite of it being the "Hamptons of England." The status-symbol side of these places was never what drew me in. The Hamptons and the Cotswolds are completely different from one another, but there's a reason they're both so popular: They're fantastic. They have beautiful houses, interesting people, and great restaurants and stores.

The Hamptons and Montauk are synonymous with Long Island luxury and leisure. From the pristine beaches of Southampton and East Hampton to Montauk's surf culture and nightlife, this stretch of the East End attracts residents and visitors who expect the very best. This fall, some of us are embracing shoulder season travel, squeezing out the last bits of sunshine from places like the Hamptons or the South of France, while others are chasing the changing colors of the trees in Austin and Montreal.
