In spring 2023, Alejandra joined her family in the Hamptons, where they had established a life as immigrants from Ecuador. Although she quickly found work cleaning houses, her experience was marred by difficult employers. Despite these challenges, her family remained determined to build a better life, focusing on finding affordable housing and applying for asylum. This reflects the broader struggles of many Latino immigrants in the region who navigate economic hardships, legal challenges, and the complexities of integration into society.
Alejandra remembered the woman's face, perpetually twisted in anger. 'I almost wanted to go back to Ecuador,' she says, 'if that was how I was going to be treated.'
She, along with her husband and two sons, found a small rental in Hampton Bays... it took them eight months, but they saved up enough to hire a lawyer to file an application for asylum.
