Poem of the week: Holy Sonnet XIX by John Donne

Oh, to vex me, contraryes meet in one:Inconstancy unnaturally hath begottA constant habit; that when I would notI change in vowes, and in devotione. As humorous is my contritione As my prophane Love, and as soon forgott:As riddlingly distemper'd, cold and hott As praying, as mute; as infinite, as none.I durst not view heaven yesterday; and to dayIn prayers, and flatt'ring speeches I court God:To morrow I quake with true feare of his rod.So my devout fitts come and go awayLike a fantastique Ague: save that here Those are my best dayes, when I shake with feare.

What I Learned at My Audience with the Pope

A few weeks ago, Giorgia Meloni, the right-wing-nationalist Prime Minister of Italy, took part in an event with Pope Francis during a conference about Italy's low birth rate, and was criticized by Italian reporters for having worn a light-beige pants suit with a long white jacket.Seizing on an old papal protocol specifying that the only women who are permitted to wear white to an audience with the Pope are queens and the consorts of Catholic kings, they suggested that Meloni was out of line, even that she was trying to draw attention to herself.

The mystery of religious faith gets a ferocious and deeply contextualized workout in Abel Ferrara's latest film, "Padre Pio," which opens Friday. It's an idiosyncratic not-quite bio-pic of the controversial Italian saint, a priest and a Capuchin friar who developed a cultish following in a rural village in the years following the First World War.

3 new books in translation blend liberation with darkness

Meghan Collins Sullivan/NPR Many novels end in liberation of one sort or another. It is a reliable way to offer catharsis, to give readers the feeling of escape while writing a book that is not escapist as such.Blending liberation with darkness is, then, nothing new but three new novels in translation take the mix as far as it can go.

How Three Atlanta Chefs Celebrate Diwali Through Food

Diwali recognizes the triumph of Rama, one of Vishnu's most revered incarnations. As he and his wife, Sita, returned after the battle with the demon-king Ravana, their kingdom welcomed them home during a moonless night by lighting oilless lamps lining every street, doorway, and windowsill. The sight of a single flame rising defiantly from a small unglazed oil lamp, its flame flickering in wisps of gentle nighttime breezes, elicits warm and cardinal feelings of hope and resilience that transcend age, time, or religious beliefs.

Benedict XVI's Most Powerful Influence on the Catholic Church Came Before He Was Pope

One of the most significant acts of the papacy of Benedict XVI, who died on New Year's Eve, at the age of ninety-five, was, his obituaries seem to agree, his stepping down from it, in February, 2013.And rightly so: the first papal resignation in nearly six hundred years was a momentous act.It diminished the monarchic qualities of the papacy, making it more akin to an elective office with a limited term of service.

Norwegian Roasted Pork Belly (Ribbe) - North Wild Kitchen

Ribbe, or roasted pork belly, is the most popular Norwegian Christmas dish in the country, just above traditional cured lamb ribs (pinnekjøtt).Yet, this holiday dish of crackling fat and pork is not an old dish in Norway like pinnekjøtt is.In fact, it probably arrived in the 18 th century, perhaps making its way from Denmark, and was found in eastern Norway, Trøndelag and the flatter regions where there was more emphasis on grain production and pig farming.

'We Dance United': Aztec Dance Troupes Preserve a Proud Heritage for Bay Area's Latinx Community | KQED

Syncretism, Sanchez explained, is the blending of two contradictory religious traditions. To keep dance traditions, Aztec performers trying to protect their Indigenous spiritual roots often concealed them under the guise of Catholicism, which helped divert unwanted hostility from Spanish colonizers. These days some Indigenous people with roots in Latin America still practice some aspects of Catholicism as well as Indigenous traditions, and many Aztec troupes reflect a melding of those two religious traditions in their ceremonies throughout the year.
