This warning highlights the risk of disruptive snow showers and icy surfaces, particularly in northern and eastern areas, with impacts on travel and potential hazards for the public. We expect this cold spell to persist into the weekend and on into next week, with further warnings possible as temperatures remain well below average and snow showers continue in places.
"We are anticipating some pretty big snows over the next 24 hours, especially across east central Minnesota to northern Wisconsin to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A lot of those places will have 6-12 inches," NWS Lead Forecaster Bob Oravec told NPR on Sunday.
The hiking group was trekking in the backcountry when a blizzard swept across the area. According to Tom Player, who spoke with British newspaper the Guardian, the tourists were concerned about the weather conditions ahead of the trek, but were told by staff that there was no reason the hike could not go ahead. Nine people went missing on Monday last week, as heavy snowfall and winds of up to 120 miles per hour swept across the Patagonian range.
