"One Chinese trekker said their group had been too scared to sleep on Saturday as snow quickly piled up around their tents, forcing them to clear it every 90 minutes. Rescuers guided all remaining trekkers near Everest's east face in Tibet to safety, including hundreds of local guides and yak herders, concluding a major search-and-rescue operation. An unusually powerful blizzard dumped heavy snow in the isolated Karma valley, leaving hundreds of hikers stranded in deep snow at about 4,200m altitude. About 350 hikers were guided out by Sunday, and authorities reported a total evacuation of 580 trekkers plus over 300 guides, yak herders and support staff. Some groups repeatedly cleared accumulating snow and descended as weather worsened. Access to Karma and Rongshar valleys and Cho Oyu remains temporarily closed.
