Blizzard's fierce winds and 'cakey' snow will sack NYC overnight, forecaster says
""It becomes very easy for power outages to occur in this area. So we are expecting some regionalized power outages across the area," Constanzer explained. "It could even be more widespread as you work your way through parts of Long Island, for example, especially east towards Montauk.""
""You have this wet, heavy snow falling down. That means the snow will kind of plaster to the sides of road signs," Constanzer said. "It's a really sticky, cakey kind of snow. It probably will not drift that much.""
A fierce blizzard is intensifying over Staten Island with multiple bands of heavy snow and strong wind gusts expected through Monday, including an intense period between 1 and 3 a.m. Total snowfall near 14 inches is predicted for the system, with the National Weather Service warning of 12 to 18 inches for Staten Island and nearby areas and up to seven additional inches Monday. Other nearby zones may see 18 to 24 inches. High winds of 50 to 60 mph combined with wet, heavy snow increase the risk of widespread power outages and stress on trees and power lines. Officials declared a state of emergency, closed schools, adjusted ferry and transit schedules, and Con Edison staged additional crews for outages.
