Category 2 hurricane-strength winter storm set to hit the East Coast
"'This 968 millibar low-pressure center is similar to a Category 2 hurricane. It would be one of the greatest storms of all time that we all remember if it were just a little bit farther to the west.'"
"'Don't be out on the roads. Be prepared. It's literally going to be a blizzard,'"
A bomb cyclone will form off the Southeast coast near Georgia and South Carolina early Saturday and rapidly intensify while tracking north along the coast through Sunday. Blizzard conditions are expected across the Carolinas, Virginia, and Massachusetts with heavy snow and whiteout conditions at the storm's peak. Snow forecasts include 1–3 inches in Washington, DC; 2–4 inches in Philadelphia; more than 4 inches in New York City; and potentially over a foot in eastern North Carolina and coastal Virginia. Coastal gusts may reach 50 mph from Georgia to Maine, with Outer Banks winds exceeding 80 mph and offshore gusts potentially near 100 mph. A pressure drop into the sub-970 millibar range would indicate an exceptionally intense system, meeting bomb cyclone criteria of a 24-millibar fall in 24 hours and signaling life-threatening winds and cold in affected areas.
