REDWOOD CITY  A real estate development firm has begun to quietly widen its footprint in downtown Redwood City with property purchases next to one of the company's high-profile projects.IQHQ, a Southern California developer that is developing a mixed-use office, housing and retail development in downtown Redwood City that's called Elco Yards, is buying sites on blocks adjacent to the huge project.

Many elected officials in San Mateo County were living it up over the weekend (April 21-23) at the San Mateo County Chamber's annual Progress Seminar.The event was in Sonoma County in the heart of Wine Country.Why wasn't this event held in San Mateo County?

REDWOOD CITY As inflation and the blow back from the coronavirus pandemic continue to put pressure on low-income people in one of the wealthiest regions in the country, San Mateo County is exploring expanded guaranteed income programs to help more families in need.The idea of giving cash to low-income folks to help make ends meet has been gaining momentum in the U.S. in recent years.

A woman at Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City died Saturday after experiencing a medical emergency while being booked into the jail, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.The San Mateo County Coroner's Office later identified the person as 25-year-old Maycarla Sulapas, of South San Francisco.

PALO ALTO - Palo Alto's outdoor restaurant scene could look dramatically different next year after city leaders voted to require "letters of consent" from neighboring businesses before restaurant parklets and outdoor seating continue on public streets - something the eatery owners say is bad move for downtown.

Palo Alto Chinese restaurant Mandarin Roots, owned by Simon Yuan and son Jarvis Yuan, closed permanently on December 31 after 24 years in business.The restaurant owners posted a note to the business website saying "all good things come to an end" and that "it has been a pleasure."

Ice cream fans throughout the Bay Area, and specifically the Mission District, rejoice: Humphry Slocombe, a fan favorite since 2008 and recognized as one of America's best ice cream companies by Food Network, is taking over a 5,876-square-foot production facility at 121 Capp Street.According to the San Francisco Business Times, the space was leased by competitor Smitten until last month.

California drivers may not face rain this week, but potholes caused by recent storms pose new dangers.In Los Angeles, requests for pothole repairs have soared as downpours have crumbled streets.Since Dec. 30, there have been 2,407 potholes reported on Los Angeles roads, with 722 this weekend alone.So far, 812 of those reported have been fixed, said Elena Stern, a spokesperson for the Department of Public Works.
