BERKELEY A 74-year-old woman died Wednesday afternoon in a fire at her duplex near Strawberry Creek Park. Authorities were trying to confirm her identity and notify relatives before releasing her name. The fire erupted about 3:53 p.m. Wednesday at a single-story duplex in the 1300 block of Poe Street. Officials said the first crew of firefighters arrived to find flames and smoke showing from three sides of the structure. Crews were also alerted there was a possible victim inside the house.

Fire crews from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded about 5:25 a.m. to a residence on Anchor Drive and found smoke and fire coming from it upon their arrival. Spokesperson Capt. Victor Daniel said officials sounded a second alarm to make sure all occupants were out of the house.

A man has been found guilty of murdering his former partner's sister and her three children in a house fire in Bradford. Sharaz Ali, 40, was convicted at Doncaster Crown Court of murdering Bryonie Gawith and her children Denisty, nine, Oscar, five, and Aubree Birtle, 22 months. He was also convicted of attempting to murder his former partner, Bryonie's sister Antonia Gawith.
A house fire in Mississauga on Halloween night is being investigated as suspicious, Peel police say. Just before 9 p.m. Friday, officers responded to a residential fire in the area of Mississauga and Kane roads, where they found Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services crews working to extinguish a blaze at a two-storey home, Peel police said in an email. The house sustained heavy damage as a result.
A boy with severe autism who died in a fire in Oshawa earlier this month was a joyful and friendly child who loved dancing to Disney songs and playing dress up, his mother said. Bentley Dunn, 11, was found dead inside a trailer that had caught fire on Oct. 18. He loved to run around and be free, he was very much a free spirit, said his mother, Amanda Dunn.

A fire at a detached house in northern Munich and explosions in the area set off a large emergency operation on Wednesday, with police and firefighters blocking roads.
