In 1991 my friend and noted film critic, B. Ruby Rich, returned from a film festival and cornered me to say she'd seen an extraordinary film and urged me to see it as soon as it opened.I went immediately to see Thelma and Louise.Watching it was like lighting a fuse under my social conscience that had lain dormant too long.

These days, when many of us think about the U.K., royals like Harry and Meghan come to mind.I, by the way, am firmly on Team Harry.How can we knock someone trying to make his family safe?But let us move over to the U.K.'s fine films, actors and actresses, TV programs, and series.From shows like Gentleman Jack and Absolutely Fabulous to some of our best films including The Imitation Game, Albert Nobbs, The Danish Girl, Billy Elliot, and , there are countless quality productions coming from a constitutional monarchy that is just 2.48% the size of the U.S.
To showcase such treasures, my friend and colleague Ruthe Stein eight years ago put together the Mostly British Film Festival in San Francisco.

Jonathan and his twin brother were born in Sierra Leone with club feet.His twin died as a baby and his parents were told he may never walk like other children.His father turned to prayer and his mother to an herbal healer, but none of it worked and the family gave in to hopelessness.That is, until a relative heard about a special clinic on the radio, leading the family to travel across the country to get treatment for Jonathan.

At night, the Croisette in Cannes is lit up by 1,500 dark pink LED lights.It happens all year.But during the film festival, which ends this weekend, these lights transform the boulevard into a red carpet.It's where industry types with lanyards queue for parties, fashion types jostle to be seen, and fans on the blue chairs sit and watch and it explains why the festival is fast becoming an unofficial fashion week.

For a town of barely 4,000 inhabitants, Deauville has a pretty sophisticated dining scene, thanks to the weekend influx of Parisians and the tourists drawn here for the horseracing, polo and film festival.Franco-Korean couple Mi-Ra and Charles recently won a Michelin star for their creative fusion at L'Essentiel, which includes dishes such as tom yam-style prawns with salsify and horseradish.

Due to the nature of my profession-as the Mercury's arts & culture editor-I can't help but see Portland's amazing side.For instance, I was standing in line at a film festival the first time I heard about a series of "glam shot" portrait pop-up in the Lloyd Center Mall.This led to our Spring Arts cover, "Big City Times," from Robbie Augspurger's December residency at ILYToo-the latest in a series of retail residencies created by a new gallery opening in the Pearl called ILY2 or "I Love You 2."
Despite reports of our city's destruction, it's growing impressive, authentic new venues like Historic Alberta House.

In February, when the Berlin International Film Festival takes place, the German capital is reliably what meteorologists term bloody cold.The overriding fashion aesthetic is puffer jackets, the puffier the better, accessorized with a scarf and a scowl.That might be one reason that, contrary to other major European festivals in Venice or Cannes, the Berlinale, as it's also known, has never acquired much of a reputation for glamour: One can't expect too many stars to hazard shoulder-frostbite in red-carpet gowns, especially as Oscar night looms in a couple of weeks.

This was a core belief of Roger's right up to April 4th, 2013, when he passed away.On this, the tenth anniversary of his death, we will commemorate him at the 23rd edition of Roger Ebert's Film Festival ("Ebertfest") with films, events and guests who reflect that principle.While we usually don't have specific themes at Ebertfest, Dr. Nathaniel Kohn ("Nate"), the Festival Director since the beginning, and I are working diligently with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, to make this festival one that Roger would have been especially proud of.
