Boots Riley's 'I Love Boosters' Gets a Hometown Premiere at SFFILM Festival | KQED
"This goes to all them hard working women / Who risk jail time just to make them a living. The film gets its name from a 2006 song by Riley's hip-hop group, The Coup, where Riley raps this lyric, connecting the movie's themes to his earlier artistic work and commentary on economic struggle and survival."
"I'm hyped as hell to bring I Love Boosters to SFFILM since they were the first organization to recognize me as a filmmaker and to support me in my filmmaking journey. It's going to be extra special to premiere in my hometown at Grand Lake Theater I've been going to since I was a kid."
Boots Riley's latest film I Love Boosters will premiere at the 69th San Francisco International Film Festival with two screenings on April 28 at Oakland's Grand Lake Theater, preceding its May 22 wide release. The Bay Area-set comedy-thriller follows Keke Palmer leading an all-woman shoplifting ring against a bob-sporting mogul played by Demi Moore. The film explores themes of class and capitalism through snappy dialogue and fast-paced action. Riley named the film after a 2006 song by his hip-hop group The Coup. Riley maintains a long relationship with SFFILM, which supported his early directing career and previously showcased his films Sorry to Bother You and I'm a Virgo at the festival.
