When I spoke with emergency management officials last year, they all mentioned the same frustrating scenario. People ignore storm warnings until the precipitation starts falling, then suddenly everyone rushes out at once. The roads become congested with anxious drivers, accidents spike, and stores run out of essentials just when people need them most. But here's what really gets meteorologists worked up about this pattern. Modern weather forecasting has become incredibly accurate, especially for major winter storms.
There are several things you'll want to keep in your car for winter emergencies, including a first aid kit, blankets, jumper cables, and even an emergency radio. But what about food? You don't want to be sitting there for hours, hungry and freezing cold, with nothing to eat. We talked to a few safety experts, including Dr. Jason Schroder, medical director and co-founder of Craft Body Scan;
But if we're not prepared, panic and confusion can hinder our ability to act appropriately when they need us most. The best way to increase your chances of responding quickly and calmly is to familiarize yourself with basic pet first aid techniques. Though never a substitute for veterinary treatment, properly applied first aid can minimize a pet's trauma and even save their life until you are able to transport them to a veterinarian,
If you're not prepared, you aren't doomed to sit in darkness until the power is restored. You can easily make an emergency candle to use temporarily during a power outage, either until your lights are turned back on or just to help you find your flashlights and batteries. All you need is two pantry staples: rice and olive oil. One of olive oil's many uses throughout history was for ancient oil lamps.
Their prepared "blackout mode" response provides some insight into how urban centers might steel themselves for energy crises in wartime, especially during cold months. Ukraine's winter can turn brutal in January and February, when temperatures typically drop to 18°F. Mass blackouts can also disrupt water and sewage systems, hospitals, public transportation, and road control, including traffic lights. Both Ukrainian troops and civilians have long learned to cope with frequent energy shortages in the winter, maintaining backup generators, battery-powered lamps, and stockpiles of coal or gas.
The good news was that I had a jump starter in the trunk of the car. The unit was a and is a 3,000A unit that's built to start engines ranging from small and huge -- gas engines up to 9 liters, and diesel engines up to 7 liters. Fully charged, this unit should be capable of up to 45 jump starts. There's a light built into the front.
Prolonged exposure to the cold conditions will lead to hypothermia for people, pets, and livestock. Cold conditions may damage or kill sensitive crops, plants, and vegetation if appropriate precautions are not taken, according to the NWS. Ensure portable heaters are working properly and are used correctly to avoid sparking a fire indoors. Do not use generators or grills inside as carbon monoxide poisoning can result.
Shelter Wear presents a wearable outer garment that transforms into a livable tent with sleeves that double as backpacks. Created by Tokyo-based fashion student Yoon Myat Su Lin, the design concept originates from her memory of an earthquake in Myanmar, where many people were suddenly displaced and left without safe, temporary shelter. That moment stayed with her, forming the basis of a garment that functions beyond being streetwear.
Israel is bracing itself for heavy downpours and flash floods that Storm Byron is forecast to produce, especially in the coastal areas. The Israel Meteorological Service said on Thursday that rain is likely to cover cities from northern Israel to the Negev in the south, with floods possible in low-lying cities. Up to 150mm (5.9 inches) of rain is estimated in some coastal areas, with wind gusts of up to 90km/h (56mph).
The seven products that sold out within 24 hours shared common DNA. Japanese design principles met practical engineering. Everyday carry essentials elevated to conversation pieces. Emergency preparedness disguised as premium lifestyle goods. Each item justified desk space, pocket real estate, or shelf prominence through consistent daily value. These weren't gifts that prompted polite thank-yous. They sparked genuine excitement and immediate use.
Australia's Bureau of Meteorology said Fina, a Category 3 cyclone sitting in the Van Diemen Gulf with wind gusts up to 165 kilometres per hour (102 miles per hour), was forecast to hit the region's remote Tiwi Islands and Cape Hotham on Saturday afternoon. It would then likely pass north of Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory, on Saturday as a severe tropical cyclone.
Ask anyone in Catalonia about last April - they'll remember. A massive blackout left thousands suddenly powerless in every sense: no lights, no banking, no news, not even a way to heat water for a cup of tea. Shops shut down, lifts froze between floors, and digital-life-as-we-know-it simply... stopped. Now, Catalonia's government is saying something many didn't expect to hear from officials: Be prepared. Just in case it happens again.

They were forgotten amid the frantic evacuation of two senior care facilities, according to state investigators, leaving the elderly women in immediate danger as the smoke and flames of the Eaton fire drew closer. In two reports published recently by the California Department of Social Services, investigators describe the harrowing circumstances of three women who were left behind in the assisted living facilities during the deadly Jan. 7 fire.
It's really important to go back to just the cybersecurity basics. Are you using multi-factor authentication? Are you training your staff and employees at all levels to not click that link? Are you patching your systems? Do you have good monitoring software and applications that are monitoring your network even when you're sleeping?
Sunnyvale's Public Safety Citizens Academy saw another graduating class last month. Participants spend one evening a week for six weeks learning about Sunnyvale's public safety model, which integrates police, fire and emergency medical services into one department. Through a combination of lectures, tours and hands-on training, academy sessions covered topics including emergency vehicle operations, fire suppression, defensive tactics and use-of-force scenario training.
A longtime Los Angeles Fire Department leader who is currently the head of the agency's Valley operations will become the department's new chief, Mayor Karen Bass confirmed Friday. Jaime Moore, currently a deputy chief, will take the reins after a lengthy, nationwide search during which the mayor interviewed fire chiefs of other major cities. Bass also visited firehouses, hearing from firefighters on what they were looking for in a chief.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Scientists say there's new evidence that two of the best-known earthquake fault lines on the West Coast are in sync and that has the potential for a major disaster. A new study by experts at Oregon State University focuses on the San Andreas Fault in Northern California, and the Cascadia Subduction Zone off the coast of Oregon and Washington.

The Trump administration abruptly cut nearly $7 million in public safety funding from Massachusetts, diverting the money to other states that are more willing to help enforce federal immigration law. Ten other states and Washington, D.C. were similarly affected. Attorney General Andrea Campbell joined with her counterparts in those states to sue officials within the Trump administration, accusing them of illegally withholding the funding.
The report - compiled by the McChrystal Group and released more than eight months after the fires - found that county practices around issuing emergency alerts, specifically evacuations, are "outdated, unclear and contradictory." That, coupled with confusion about who has what authority around evacuation decision-making, "led to inconsistencies in preparedness strategies across the county and a lack of clear documentation and communication processes," the report said.
