"We love the range of names submitted, and getting more people engaged in choosing names helps awareness. Some of the names are really clever and funny and we enjoy seeing them suggested. However, we couldn't ever use comedy names for our storms, because at the heart of it, naming storms has an important safety purpose."
The Met Office launched a public scheme a decade ago allowing citizens to suggest names for storms. The initiative has generated thousands of recommendations, ranging from serious suggestions to creative and comedic options. While the Met Office appreciates the engagement and humor in submissions like 'Stormy McStormFace' and 'Bruce Spring Storm,' officials emphasize that storm naming serves a critical safety function. Consequently, only appropriate names are selected for the official list, which is jointly compiled by the Met Office, Ireland's Met Eireann, and the Netherlands's meteorological service. The scheme successfully increases public awareness and participation in weather preparedness.
