1 day agoWhat will the storm names be for 2026 as Storm Goretti strikes?
Storm Goretti brings strong winds, heavy rain, and snow to the UK as the 2025/26 storm season uses jointly chosen, rotating name lists.
Ten years ago this month, the Met Office began naming storms with Abigail, which (who?) was unremarkable, unless you lived in the Outer Hebrides, where the schools closed and the power shut down, so nobody could even go to the cinema. That's the thing about weather: it's very unevenly distributed. There's no way of getting those with the broadest shoulders to carry the heaviest weight.
Heavy rain will spread in across southern England late on Wednesday, spreading north-east and likely to persist right through until late Thursday. The Met Office yellow warning for rain covers much of southern and eastern England from midnight on Wednesday night into Thursday, and through until 21:00 BST. Rainfall totals by early Thursday morning could be widely 20-30mm (around 1in), and for some places 30-50mm (up to 2in).
Storm Floris is predicted to hit parts of the UK with gusts of up to 85 mph, prompting an amber wind warning for Scotland and a yellow warning for northern England and Northern Ireland.
