Imperial County earthquake swarm begins to slow after over 350 recorded quakes
"A swarm is a group of quakes, dozens to thousands, where there are many earthquakes close in size and no obvious mainshock."
"I was just scared. All of a sudden, it was a big jolt, and everything started moving. I was like, 'Holy crud.' They just kept on coming and coming and coming and coming. And as we're speaking right now, I do feel it rumbling beneath me."
Hundreds of earthquakes near Brawley in Imperial County have been occurring close together without an obvious mainshock. More than 350 minor quakes struck since Saturday morning near the city of Brawley between the Salton Sea and the U.S.-Mexico border. The strongest quake measured 4.7 magnitude and occurred just after midnight. Foreshocks began around 3 a.m. Saturday. The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services has been monitoring the activity and reported no major damage or injuries. Earthquake expert Lucy Jones said this type of activity is common for the Brawley Seismic Zone. Brawley officials said crews addressed minor issues such as water leaks and utility concerns and reported no immediate threat to public safety or major infrastructure damage. A resident described repeated jolts and ongoing rumbling.
