Hakeem Jeffries is positioned to potentially become Speaker of the House, leveraging historical trends and a narrow Republican majority.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries says replacing Nancy Pelosi is like following after Michael Jordan. Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images In response to the deaths of Renee Macklin Good and Alex Pretti, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., is urging his Republican counterparts to "rein in" Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). "ICE is completely and totally out of control and it needs to be reined in, which is why we need dramatic reform at the Department of Homeland Security," Jeffries told Morning Edition.
VELSHI: This what do you make of this business about nationalizing elections? Every every day Donald Trump sort of says it differently and then some Republicans say they don't like it, and the White House walks it back. But he is talking about not not changing our entire election system, just changing it in some places. He mentioned Detroit and Philadelphia and Atlanta. I wonder what they all have in common. It's dangerous talk. One can laugh about it, but it's really dangerous talk.
Well, that's a disgusting comment and the president's lies and misinformation continue to fan the flames of these types of violent incidents. And it's at a moment like this where we actually need leadership from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and it's something that we never get from this president. Ilhan Omar, of course, is a strong, courageous, hardworking public servant. This should have never happened. I'm thankful that she is physically OK. She's mentally strong, as is always the case, and we stand by her.
JIM ACOSTA: Trump does have, he's had propaganda outlets work on his behalf for some time, but we've seen even among the major networks, CBS for example, which has been taken over by some pretty far right individuals and the Ellisons and Barry Weiss and so on. I mean, they had their anchor on the other night, sort of both-sidesing what took place on January 6th. I wanna play this and just get your take on that.
I think it's something that James Comer, if he's actually being honest about Congress being a separate and coequal branch of government. We don't work for Donald Trump. We don't work for JD Vance. We don't work for their billionaire donors. We work for the American people, and Congress, in its role as a separate and co-equal branch of government, should make sure that the administration comes clean as it relates to the president's ability to do his job at the level that the American people deserve.
Defending herself against censure on the House floor on Tuesday night, Plaskett framed Epstein as a constituent and argued that the text exchange came in February 2019, months before the federal investigation into him was public knowledge. Epstein, however, had been convicted of soliciting a minor for prostitution 11 years prior having served a jail sentence in 2008. The censure attempt narrowly failed in a 209-214 vote.
Nancy Pelosi Speaker Emerita Pelosi is a legendary figure, a hero, [and] she's done so much for so many over so many years, Jeffries said. She speaks powerfully, she speaks authentically, she speaks eloquently on issues of importance to the American people. As I indicated, Nancy Pelosi is a legend. She has done more for people here in this country than almost every single American who has served in the House of Representatives, Jeffries said.
Police charged Christopher Moynihan, 34, of Clinton, on Oct. 18 for making a terroristic threat, a Class D felony. Moynihan was arraigned before the Town of Clinton Court, remanded to the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center, and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday. The State Police worked with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Poughkeepsie and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Joint Terrorism Task Force to investigate the case and make the arrest.
Ossé enters the picture as Mamdani is trying to assuage some Democrats' concerns about his mayoral campaign against former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who's running as an independent. Ossé, 27, has a ubiquitous social media presence that Mamdani has cited as a major influence. Any effort by Ossé to unseat Jeffries - one of the most powerful Democrats in the nation - likely would deepen the divide within the Democratic Party over age and ideology.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) got into a heated debate in the hallways of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday with his fellow New Yorker, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY). Lawler waited for Jeffries outside of a meeting room and pressed him to sign on to a one-year extension of Obamacare subsidies, which expire under the current GOP funding bill that the Democrats have blocked. The tense exchange was shared online by several Congressional reporters who recorded it.
"Trump 2028," they said, situated across from the seated lawmakers, Vice President JD Vance and several untouched Diet Cokes. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries leaned over to Vance, himself a potential 2028 contender, and quipped, "Hey, bro, you got a problem with this?" The room chuckled in response. "It was the randomest thing in the world, because we're sitting there, we're having a serious conversation, and all of a sudden these two red hats appear," Jeffries recalled later at the Capitol.
Is it helpful to post pictures of Leader Jeffries in a sombrero if you're trying to have good faith talks with him? asked the reporter Oh, I think it's funny! The president's joking, and we're having a good time. You can negotiate in good faith while also poking a little bit of fun at some of the absurdities of the Democrats' positions and even, you know, poking some fun at the absurdity of the Democrats themselves, replied Vance.
Charlamagne tha God revealed his brutal nickname for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) while detailing his gripes with him on Tuesday. Charlamagne and the rest of The Breakfast Club welcomed entertainers Claudia Jordan and Erica Cobb to the show, where the duo talked about their new podcast Accidentally Informed. While talking about their favorite guests, Jordan who's also a contributor for CNN revealed she enjoys political conversations and spoke fondly of her talk with Jeffries. That's when host DJ Envy revealed that Charlamagne hates the minority leader: JORDAN: You do? CHARLAMAGNE: I don't hate him. I just don't think he stands for anything. I call him AIPAC Shakur.
