NYC Council Member Files Paperwork For Primary Run Against Hakeem Jeffries
"The Democratic Party's leadership is not only failing to effectively fight back against Donald Trump, they have also failed to deliver a vision that we can all believe in,"
"take a very dire situation in order for me to even consider spending the rest of my 20s in DC."
"While I appreciate the great work that Councilmember Ossé has done on the council, especially for tenants,"
"I believe that there are many ways right here in New York City to both deliver on an affordability agenda and take on the authoritarian administration in the White House."
Chi Ossé filed paperwork to challenge House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries in next year’s Democratic primary. Ossé represents Brooklyn’s 36th District, which includes Bedford‑Stuyvesant and Crown Heights, and recently joined the Democratic Socialists of America. Ossé criticized Democratic leadership for failing to effectively oppose Donald Trump and for lacking a unifying vision. Mayor‑elect Zohran Mamdani urged Ossé to remain in New York City to pursue affordability goals and warned the challenge could disrupt local policy priorities. A Jeffries spokesperson welcomed the primary challenge and called for a rigorous debate on leadership for Brooklyn and the nation.
