The universe of competitive House seats is historically small this midterm cycle. Jeffries is trying to persuade Democrat-controlled states to redraw legislative maps to counteract GOP mid-decade redistricting in Texas, Missouri and elsewhere. He met with Maryland state Senate President Bill Ferguson to discuss a proposed map that would eliminate the state's last remaining House Republican. Ferguson has resisted moving the map in the Senate, warning of court backlash and potential losses for Democrats in Congress. State courts previously threw out a 2022 Maryland map as an "extreme gerrymander." Jeffries secured new maps in California and Virginia but faces resistance in New York, Illinois and Maryland.
