The new occupants are a Brooklyn family - but other details about them weren't available. The eye-popping deal is the kind of number any local would expect in Tribeca, along Central Park or in the most polished corners of brownstone Brooklyn. Not here, where the canal's history still clings to the neighborhood's identity even as luxury buildings rise and a rezoned future takes shape.

The artists of Gowanus will open their doors to the public this weekend, inviting Brooklynites to explore their studios, their work, and their community at Gowanus Open Studios. Rapidly-changing Gowanus has long been an artists haven, but most paint, sketch and sculpt behind closed doors, tucked away in converted industrial buildings and studio collectives. Open Studios is an annual celebration of local creatives, and a chance for residents to get to know them - and even purchase some work to take home.

The Dear Neighbor Project, a multi-site visual art exhibition by Tiffany Baker, aims to raise public awareness of flooding in Gowanus through community narratives.

The Coignet building, a stone concrete mansion from 1873, is on the market for $2.995 million after extensive renovations, amid Gowanus' changing landscape.

The property at 175 Third St. was purchased by Tavros Capital and Charney Companies, who plan to develop a large-scale residential project on the site.
