HOLMES: The flour-milling business was created by Harmon S. Holmes. ULABY: His great-great-grandfather. HOLMES: And then there's Howard Samuel Holmes, and then Howard Sumner Holmes. ULABY: His grandfather. His dad is also Howard Holmes, and so is his baby boy. But great-grandmother Mabel invented Jiffy corn bread mix during the Great Depression. Jiffy mix cost 10 cents a box back then. Right now, 50 cents at Walmart. That old-fashioned package, says Holmes, sells itself.
And the family dynamic plays out in a number of ways. The first thing is that we can take a long-term view. We'd like to think we think in generations and not just in quarters. And because of our ownership, we carry the name of our owners on the door, we have an obligation to make sure that we behave well in society.
Located in Bartow, Florida, Hong Kong Chinese Restaurant does the most business during hurricanes. Connie Wu recalls her parents' restaurant was still taking orders during Hurricane Irma in 2017, even as the lights went out and the army rolled up to their door. "They had to order food," Wu says. "Most people would be winding down or thinking about retirement, and he's going off on this really risky venture," said his daughter Amy Jackson. "I think for him it just really mattered about having something of your own that you could really bring all of yourself to. He always used to say, 'Why rent something when you can buy it?'"
After 38 years of running Sari Palace on University Avenue, owners Anil and Asha Thakkar are stepping down. But the South Asian clothing boutique is not going anywhere, and the new owners are no strangers to the shop and the local community. Shelly and Deepak Ajmani, who own Bombay Spice House and Lishq, which are both located on the same block as Sari Palace, between Ninth and Tenth streets, are the new owners of the boutique, along with their children Reeya and Manav Ajmani.

So it was heartbreaking - and hunger-inducing - when the restaurant was shut down for nearly a year for repairs following a devastating roof fire in July 2024.
