Henry 'Hank' Jackson, founder of Hank's Mini Market in Hyde Park, dies at 85
""Most people would be winding down or thinking about retirement, and he's going off on this really risky venture," said his daughter Amy Jackson. "I think for him it just really mattered about having something of your own that you could really bring all of yourself to. He always used to say, 'Why rent something when you can buy it?'""
""He has this history of showing up and serving the community for decades beyond and before Hank's Mini Market.""
Henry "Hank" Jackson opened Hank's Mini Market in Hyde Park in 1997 at age 57 while South L.A. was still recovering from the riots. He worked in finance for 37 years at Lockheed-Martin and gained retail experience working nights and managing at local liquor stores. Jackson purchased the store property rather than renting, enabling the family business to withstand economic downturns and the pandemic. His daughter Kelli redesigned the store into a community hub offering fresh produce, events, and cultural tributes. Jackson lived in the area, served the neighborhood for decades, and died at 85 in View Park-Windsor Hills.
