Canadian-born Patrick Roberts Loewen has survived a 'criminal' childhood, cancer and drug addiction to become a vigilante of sorts for the city The community spirit in Galway city is definitely strong, but it is rare to see someone caring about its streets like Patrick Roberts Loewen does. Patrick is using his art not only to keep Galway clean but also to keep it safe. And after hearing his back story - which includes a difficult childhood, cancer, an abrupt change of career, and a vision - the reasons are clear.
Mother always said not to play with your food. But the containers the food is packaged in now, there's a loophole. On Nov. 14, an art event in Hayward will highlight that humble but culturally treasured packaging medium: the pizza box. Suitably, the venue is not a gallery or a museum but a pizza parlor, Rayo's Pizza on Mission Blvd., which has baked hot pies since 2022.
Artists David Solnit and Jen Bloomer, who live in the neighborhood, designed the mural with direction from the community. Solnit said it celebrates Berkeley's status as a sanctuary city and is a call to protect our neighbors. Images of squash, corn and beans which are known as the three sister plants as they grow better when planted in close proximity than alone reinforce the idea that community is beneficial.

Artists in Britain have customised St George's flags with messages celebrating diversity, in response to a campaign in which national banners have been flown from lamp-posts, outside homes and painted on roundabouts. While for many, flying the flag is a genuine expression of national pride, some flags have been graffitied on businesses and places of worship belonging to minority ethnic Britons, in some cases with slurs, after the launch of the operation raise the colours.
